Press Club of Dallas honors ‘legends’ of journalism
The Press Club of Dallas recently honored 13 “North Texas legends” at its Excellence in Journalism Awards program at the Sixth Floor Museum. This is the fifth year the club has held a program that recognizes local journalism leaders.
This year’s honorees included four sports journalists: Sam Blair, Dan Jenkins, George Riba and Brad Sham.
Blair, who started working for The Dallas Morning News in 1954, drew a big laugh as he slowly made his way to the stage and said, “I’m not drunk, just old.”
Five women were among the honorees: BJ Austin of KERA-FM (90.1), Clarice Tinsley of KDFW-TV (Channel 4), former newspaper columnist Helen Bryant Anders, Dallas Examiner publisher Mollie Finch-Belt and former Univision executive Becky Munoz-Diaz.
Others honored were journalism professor David McHam, former Dallas Morning News editor Bob Mong, Dallas Voice founding partner Robert Moore and Fort Worth Star-Telegram columnist and editor Bob Ray Sanders.
Each honoree received an engraved crystal award and a tribute introduction from KXAS-TV (NBC5) anchor Kristi Nelson, who served as emcee.
The awards selection committee included Paul Wahlstrom, Rena Pederson, JoAnn Holt and Hugh Aynesworth.
